As you may know from recent updates here at Eat With Your Eyes headquarters, while we have been occasionally posting about food and photography, we’ve (I’ve) also been posting about the film I am producing this summer, Dream Baby Dream, a gritty Brooklyn crime drama about three friends trying to make ends meet while trying to survive the uncertain life of our current gig economy. In December we shot a proof of concept for the film which gave us a rough first 10 minutes, and now we are in full swing preparing to shoot the feature this Summer. One of the biggest challenges of a feature film is getting enough money to make it. Imagine the irony of making a movie about three friends trying to get ahead in New York City while trying to make ends meet working in a gig economy while you yourself and your crew members are also working to get ahead to make the the movie while working in a similar gig economy. Life! The greatest jester. While we’ve been fortunate to find some financing for this low budget feature, we are still short some funds. Recently we decided to turn our efforts to Kickstarter - yes Kickstarter, the crowdfunding site. I’ve often associated Kickstarter with short films, limited run kitchen products no one had invented yet, and board games, but not really feature films. However then we met Taylor K. Shaw, Kickstarter’s Head of Film Outreach who very much changed my mind. Taylor is also a writer, she started an animation company, and now she is helping to get independent films crowd funded and get them made. Part of the process of developing Dream Baby Dream has been doing a weekly podcast with my co-producer and the film’s director, my friend Roland Ellis, so we had Taylor on recently to talk about Kickstarter, indie film, and the movie Sinners. You can listen to the pod here.
In other great Kickstarter news, the Dream Baby Dream Kickstarter is in full swing and after just 3 days online we raised almost 30k of our 50k goal!! We were even named a “Project We Love” by the Kickstarter team which will get us even more visibility. This is a HUGE vote of confidence for the film. If you would like to know more about the movie and how to help bring it to life, go to our Kickstarter page. People say it all the time, but really, every dollar does help and even just $30 will get you an online screening so you can see the movie when it’s done regardless of distribution. So please do check it out.
Here’s a statement from Roland here about the movie and what we’re doing and how to help:
That is it for now, but I do have many more upcoming updates about the movie, some easy recipes, and news about some huge upcoming LIVE SHOWS in NYC and abroad. Yes it will be a very busy Summer but a good one, and I hope it is the same for you dear friend. Enjoy the rest of your Spring, talk soon, and if you’re inclined join us in making Dream Baby Dream a reality.
bye! Cory
